Aila SDK 3.0 Release Notes

Today we are releasing Aila SDK v3.0. This version has been fully qualified for iOS and iPadOS 16 through the newly available iOS/iPadOS 26, ensuring compatibility with the latest Apple devices and operating systems, including the latest iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max.

Aila SDK v3.0 includes several updates, including performance enhancements, improved scanning accuracy, and greater overall reliability. In addition to these core improvements, this release also introduces new features such as on-device PDF417 parsing and front-camera scanning, designed to streamline workflows and enable new use cases for Aila-powered workflows.

Introducing Two Release Branches

Beginning with Aila SDK 3.0, we will be releasing a standard build and a legacy build of the SDK. Read on to determine which branch is right for your deployment:

Standard

The standard build of the Aila SDK supports all SoftScan customers or Interactive Kiosk customers exclusively running USB-C-based iPads, including the iPad 10.9 (Gen 10) iPad 11 (Gen 11) , iPad Pro 12.9 (Gen 4/5/6), or the iPad Air 13 (M2/3). This build does not require microphone permissions unlike previous versions of the Aila SDK.

Legacy

The legacy build of the Aila SDK is intended for Interactive Kiosk customers who have all, or a mix, of Lightning-based iPads in their fleet. It is not intended for SoftScan customers. This build will still require microphone permissions to be accepted, as the kiosk communicates over the audio jack.

Front Camera Scanning

Today, we’re excited to introduce the option to scan barcodes with the front camera of an Apple device. This new feature gives you greater flexibility to further tailor and customize your workflow.

On-Device Driver’s License Parsing

We’re introducing a new feature that enables the parsing of the PDF417 barcode found on the back of an AAMVA-compatible driver’s license. This incredibly useful feature is ideal for time-consuming actions such as completing a registration form where data can be extracted and filled from the ID. It can also be used for simple tasks such as performing age-verification for restricted sales. 

All parsing is performed locally on the device. No data is transmitted to external services or the cloud, ensuring fast performance and full control over sensitive information.

Bug Fixes and Improvements

Updated Aila Decoder

We have updated the Aila Decoder, which brings an overall performance increase in barcode scanning. This also fixes a bug with some DataMatrix and MSI Plessy codes not being decoded correctly. 

Updated Demo Apps

Bundled with Aila’s SDK and plugins are demo apps that showcase the SDK’s functionality. These are open source projects that complement our documentation to give developers a peek under the hood on how to implement the SDK in their own apps. The Aila Demo project for Swift and the Aila Example project for React Native have both received a facelift with some updated visuals making it easier to read. The Swift version has been updated to SwiftUI.

React Native support for v.74+

V3.0 of the Aila React Native Plugin can now support React Native v.74+. Previously, the Aila React Native Plugin was limited to using v.73 or older.

Notice on Legacy iOS/iPadOS Compatibility

Aila SDK versions produced after January 1, 2026 will no longer support iOS/iPadOS 16 and earlier. To ensure the best possible experience and security, we strongly encourage all customers to keep their Apple devices updated to the latest major iOS/iPadOS version.
